The European Commission has published an orientation paper with an indicative list of topics that are expected to be funded under the FP7 2012 Health calls for proposals. The call in managed by the Research and Innovation DG – Directorate Health. The final work programme is expected to be published on 20 July 2011, together with the launch of the FP7 Health calls for proposals. The orientation paper is available here.

In the Work Programme 2012, the area of System Medicine will focus on multidisciplinary research that will integrate a wide variety of biological, medical and clinical data to understand and model complex human diseases. A major goal of this call is to stimulate system biology approaches for medical and clinical application and therefore to establish the basis for system medicine.  The indicative orientation of  topics may  include the following list:

• SME-driven research applying systems biology approaches to address medical and clinical needs. Research should focus on the development, improvement and application of systems biology approaches to medical/clinical questions (maximum  EU contribution EUR 3 000 000)

This topic includes a specific focus on SMEs establishing favourable and simplified conditions for them to participate:

• -         2 years duration;
• -         Minimum of partners;
• -         Minimum of 30% dedicated to SMEs over the 3 millions budget and;
• -         one report is required at the end of the project. 
• Systems medicine: Applying systems biology approaches for understanding multifactorial human diseases and their co-morbidities (EU contribution from EUR 6 000 000 to maximum EUR 12 000 000)
•  Preparing for the future research and innovation activities in systems medicine. (maximum  EU contribution EUR 3 000 000)

Research and Innovation DG – Health Directorate of the European Commission will be present at the International Conference of Systems Biology (ICSB 2011).

The Health Directorate is organizing and EU booth and a workshop on the 28th August, 09:00-13:30 in Heidelberg, which is hosted at ICSB 2011; for further information about the workshop agenda and the conference please, see the indicative programme.

The workshop entitled "EU Collaborative research in Systems Biology: Success stories & funding opportunities", aims to present the EU research funding opportunities in the area of Systems Medicine during FP7, successful examples for EU Collaborative research in Systems Biology, and to contribute, with a panel discussion to a debate on how to pave the way forward, at the European level, for the transition from Systems Biology to Systems Medicine.
Those participating at the conference will have the opportunity to discuss with the EU scientific officers responsible for the area of systems medicine.
